Phacic Lens Implantation
Phacic lens implantation is the implant of lenses in the eye
to correct myopia up to -26 Diopter and hyperopia up to +12.00
Diopter. The normal lens is not removed.
The advantage of this procedure is that normal accommodation
is maintained especially in the pre-presbyopic phase of sight.
The other advantage is that astigmatism can be successfully removed
during the surgery at the same time. The lens could be removed
at any stage if ever the need arises, but is normally left in
the eye permanently. The procedure is done in a sterile theatre
under general or local anesthetic and takes about half an hour.
Both eyes are normally done at the same time.
I perform this procedure where the Excimer Laser is contraindicated
like where the cornea is too thin. I also prefer to do this procedure
where the myopia is over -10.00 diopters or the hyperopia exceeds
+4.00 diopters.
It is a highly successful procedure, but it is important to understand
that as with any surgery complications can very rarely occur.
